My favourite game of late is the infinitely charming Crossy Road. I made a desktop image inspired by it (click to download 1920×1200 version):
What you can do with no programming experience, Unity, and a 2.5-day Game Jam Just want to play the game? Click here. ❤ ❤ ❤ This weekend I participated in #PegJam2014. My goal was to create a simple 2-button endless runner in Unity. I had a basic concept that involved a player running through an office, dodging […]
Summer holidays had barely started when I realized that the amount of work I needed to complete over the summer was going to require an extra boost in productivity and focus. My first measure was to cut myself off from Twitter completely: Taking a summer vacation from Twitter. See you all in September! — Mike […]

It’s official. The Sticker Trade is a thing. In spite of the fact that I’m not going to GDC this year, there’s been so much talk about collecting app stickers that I decided to make a collector’s list. Hit up the list for info on how to save some money on your own order, and […]
After an in-game comment from @TeaRascal about how @cannos should make a “Boost Greed” t-shirt for Disc Drivin’, I put this together. Get it in my t-shirt shop here.
This is not directly related to game development, but I’ve had a few friends fall victim to theft lately, and the devastation of losing years’ worth of family photos and client work files; not to mention everything else we store on our devices. Below is my list of tips for helping secure yourself against losing […]
This year for Christmas, my parents gave each of us (I have 4 older brothers) a folio full of mementoes and other things collected throughout our childhood. This gem was in a book I made in Grade 2 called “All About Me”. Now you see that the sentiment behind the name of my company began […]
As has been known to happen, something extremely cool has been created out of nothing more than a Twitter conversation. @mysterycoconut, @LordBron, @tearascal, @rje, and @chaoticbox were talking about sketching more, and #iSketchADay was born. It’s a casual, no-rules way to encourage all of us wannabe artists to sketch more, and share it with everyone. […]
Disc Drivin’. You push discs around a track, and it’s awesome. I’m starting a little round robin tournament. Check the details.
Leading the way in indie awesomeness, Noel Llopis – @snappytouch – has rounded up a group of developers (including yours truly) to sponsor the 360iDev Game Jam in Austin next week. We’ve been talking a lot about how to take it up a notch. There was a lot of interest expressed, so we decided it […]
I’ve said it many times before, my trip to 360iDev in April was a catalyst for an explosion of game dev activity for We Heart Games. Previously I was a lone game designer, hiring programmers to make my iPhone game. I got invited to speak about the process I used to make the game at […]
We ♥ Shirts! I’ve opened up a t-shirt shop with three designs; more are coming. Click the image to get your shop on.
Coders often find it difficult to relate to designers, much less collaborate and communicate with them in a productive — and enjoyable! — way. If you’re already working with a designer, these tips can help you better understand them; if you’re looking for a designer, this could help you find a competent one.
Great apps are like babies… very easy to conceive but very hard to deliver! – Ted Mico, Interscope / Geffen / A&M Everyone and their dog has an app or game idea. The skill to implement that idea, and implement it well, is much less common. If you are a designer and love games, this […]
Update Jan 22, 2014: A very important counterpoint to this post is here. How the “do what you love” attitude is elitist and divisive. Well worth reading. I recently heard on the radio that 95% of Canadians don’t love their job.* While sad, that information made me feel pretty good about being in that top […]
The fundraiser idea was a huge success! This community-driven fundraiser was hobbled together on April 3, a mere 2 days ago, very shortly after I had given up on the dream of attending – and speaking at – 360iDev. Within 12 hours of posting the fundraiser page, there was $460 pledged. At the end of […]
I’m running an experimental fundraiser to see if I can raise enough money to go to 360iDev, a conference I was invited to speak at. See the full story here.
UPDATE: This post is not the end of the story… click here to see a last-ditch community-driven fundraiser effort to remedy the situation…! I’ve put off making this announcement because there was still hope that things might turn around, but it is now confirmed. I am very sad to say that I will not be […]
I’ve been playing ngmoco’s We Rule for iPhone the last few days. While I enjoyed collecting, upgrading and customizing (who doesn’t?), I began to get a feeling that this isn’t the kind of “game” I want to play. This post attempts to articulate the root of that feeling. Update: I’m aware that We Rule is […]
My life has been put on pause for a little while. This week my wife and I welcomed our 2nd son into the world! As we adjust to everything, most We Heart Games development has been put on hold. Once things level off, we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled program.
On February 3rd I did a speaker chat for 360iDev. The chat is a really interesting forum for connecting with others. Everyone logs into a chat room and can type their questions and comments. I spoke into my microphone so that I could answer questions verbally. It felt a little one-way at first, but it […]
I’m honoured to be chosen to speak at the upcoming 360iDev conference in San Jose. I’m very excited about this opportunity, and can’t wait to meet all the other iPhone developers that will be there. The schedule looks incredible, and there are many slots where it will be difficult for me to choose which session […]
We made a cake to enter the Great App Bake-off, over at App Cakes. Who knew apps could be so tasty? Below are some pics of the process:
Just posted a new video giving a walkthrough of Face Race for iPhone. Not much more to say, go have a look!
We made it into the App Store, just in time for Christmas! Get Face Race here (iTunes link) Got a Christmas party still to go to? Bring it along and use the “Christmas” setting. Good times! And Merry Christmas, everyone!
In a year with a lot of news about massive layoffs and several game developers closing their doors, Canadian Game Development numbers are going up.
Face Race has reached 1.0 and was submitted to the Apple review team yesterday afternoon. We’re not sure if it’s possible for it to be approved before Christmas, but we can hope, right? Stay tuned…
We’ve finished adding all the new graphics to Face Race, and are ready to show them here. It really has come a long way, as you’ll see with these before & after shots. Let us know what you think, and how we could make it even better! We’ve also posted these screenshots on ConceptFeedback.com, and […]
